New French and European legislations call for an increased use of recycled materials. However, the recycled plastics currently available on the market vary widely in terms of mechanical, rheological, thermal, olfactory and structural properties. To contain this variability, formulations need to be adapted in order to obtain a stable output product meeting the specifications of various applications.

Objectives

FAVIA (adaptative formulation thanks to artificial intelligence) project aims to predict formulations (recipes) and machine parameters to be used for the production of plastic compounds including recycled materials. Artificial intelligence will be at the heart of FAVIA’s technical innovation. Predictive algorithms will be developed first using current production data to establish a baseline, then incorporating recycled material and taking into account its variability. The project targets key players in the plastics products value chain with major environmental, economic and societal impacts in the AURA Region. In particular, it aims to:

  • Develop skills essential for the emergence of an effective circularity of polymers;
  • Promote the use of recycled plastic materials;
  • Develop decision-making tools and resources for customised formulations;
  • Improve the predictivity of numerical models;
  • Improve on-line process control;
  • Set up an ecosystem and dedicated resources to work on improving the role of AI models in extrusion processes;
  • Cross-fertilise local expertise.
