The global composites market is rapidly growing and constantly evolving, boosted by the unique characteristics of these materials (lightweight, strength, etc.). Although carbon fibre composites account for only a small percentage of the total composites market, they are widely used in high added-value products. Despite their strategic nature and the shortage of fibres, their high industrial value and the high price of virgin materials, most end-of-life carbon composite products are currently landfilled or incinerated, generating significant environmental pollution.

Objectives

BMC and SMC processes in order to avoid landfill. To achieve this, the following sub-objectives have been defined:

  • Demonstrate the industrial recyclability of carbon fibre composites and produce recycled carbon fibres of sufficient quality (mechanical and optical properties, environmental performance) using the chemical recycling process developed by Extracthive.
  • Design processes for producing new products using recycled and bio-based materials
  • Evaluate the performance of recycled materials, and eco-design existing products using these materials and associated processes
  • Design products with similar mechanical properties and radio transparency to existing products, at a competitive cost
  • Prepare the implementation of a value chain for the recycling of carbon fibre composite products
